Doctors’ dress affect patients’ views

Appearance is crucial for doctors Share this article

Becoming a medical doctor is a monumental achievement, so the clothes that you wear should reflect the status of your profession.

Though you'll be wearing a white coat over your outfit, patients and other hospital employees can see what you're wearing underneath. You make an impression on everyone who sees you inside and outside the hospital.

Recognize the importance of looks
Patients and the general public have a preconceived notion about how doctors should dress. Males should wear slacks, button-ups, ties and dress shoes. Females should wear dresses or dress pants, button-ups, and appropriate shoes. Hair should always be combed and maintained throughout the day. Additionally, men have to tend to their facial hair – if you prefer a clean-shaven look, always maintain it.

Patients expect their physicians to look a certain way, and for good reason. After all, people are likely more willing to share their personal and medical information and concerns with doctors who are dressed the part. In fact, a study was published in 2005 in the American Journal of Medicine that surveyed 400 men and women about how doctors' outfits affected their views. Seventy five percent of them preferred their doctors to wear professional attire. Poll respondents stated that the dress influenced their perception of the physician and would be more willing to discuss sensitive topics if the doctors dressed professionally.

Boast a personal style
Dressing professionally doesn't mean having to give up style or comfort. Patterns can be featured on ties and dresses. An extra touch of elegance can be featured in jewelry, such as cufflinks, tie clips, earrings or rings.

The same attention to detail should be applied to other aspects of your outfit, including your shoes. Closed-toed, nonslip dress shoes will keep your feet safe from sharp instruments and spills. A good-looking pair of quality work shoes doesn't have to be expensive when you know where to shop.

Outfitting yourself professionally doesn't only benefit patients. It also serves as a reminder. You worked long and hard to become a physician, and you should be as proud of your outfit as you are of your achievements. You earned your white coat, so wear it with pride.
