How to stay safe while working at an amusement park

If you're considering becoming a staff member at an amusement park, you can bet that you'll be running around all the time. Therefore, putting on sun block, wearing comfortable shoes and being aware of your surroundings is essential for your well-being.

There's no doubt that working in such a fast-paced and fun environment will be a great experience, but if you're not prepared for the risks, you could wind up hurting yourself. It's no secret that amusement parks can be dangerous places. Between high-octane rides, crowds of excited visitors and slippery floors, getting from point A to point B can be hazardous.

Recognize the dangers
There have been plenty of incidents at amusement parks where workers have been injured. Whether you want to work at the box office, operate a ride, are part of the cleanup crew or cook in the kitchen, there are hazards that you'll have to deal with on a daily basis.

Staying alert and knowing what to look out for will help keep you and guests safe. Here are some tips to keep in mind while you consider applying for a job at an amusement park.

  • Know the boundaries: Given the number of rides and the speed at which they operate, getting too close to any of the many moving parts is dangerous. There are plenty of barriers in place to keep guests at bay, but if you want to work as an operator, you'll be spending hours in a much closer proximity to the machinery. Pay close attention during training and don't hesitate to ask any questions or voice any concerns. It's always better to err on the side of caution. If you don't want to be an operator, you might have to go past these rides anyway. In these cases, if you're unsure of whether you can go through safely, take the long way around.
  • Watch out for spills: Spills are unavoidable. They can happen anywhere and they may not always be noticed by other workers. Regardless of how much of a rush you're in, glance at the ground frequently to make sure there aren't any slip hazards. If you see guests having trouble in a certain area or avoiding a spot, chances are, something needs to be mopped up. Depending on your responsibilities, you may need to contact another staff member and block it off or clean it up. Investing in a high-quality pair of slip-resistant shoes can ensure that you stay safe and comfortable no matter what the conditions may be.
  • Ensure that equipment is maintained: There are a huge number of parts that go into each ride and in various pieces of equipment in the kitchen. Any missing or worn-out components can be dangerous. If you suspect anything, tell your manager to have it inspected.
  • Deal with inclement weather: Spring and summer may bring long days and warm weather, but there will be thunderstorms, and clearing the park may be part of your duties. You'll have to watch out for slippery floors, high winds and possibly lightning if the storm is serious enough. Chances are, the facility will have a response plan in place, so it's essential to learn the details and follow the steps carefully.

Once you familiarize yourself with the layout of the park, finding your way around and staying safe won't be difficult. The trick is to always be aware of your surroundings, keep an eye out for potential trouble and know the proper response to each scenario. Your safety and that of guests is always priority.
